Is avn.com built on wordpress with a CMS plugin?

There are free Wordpress magazine themes that look a lot nicer than that.

Regardless, I don't think that's Wordpress.

wordpress is more used than those

Okay well looks like I will just give it a go with wordpress and then later in the year try out Drupal and see what can be done.
