    computer problem

Have a computer which started acting up Sunday by freezing... shutting down with every program... IE, Macromedia, outlook, etc.

The computer did make a "buzzing" sound at one point

Used it today in safe mode with no crashes...

Now I can't start it up... press power and it will start to load up and then stop. I can see the screen to press F12 and have tried both pressing F12 and also not, but it just stops loading up.

    Any ideas?

Have you tried bootin' off the cdrom with the OS (windows?) backup disk?

Is the cpu fan spinning? Maybe that 'buzzing' sound was made by the fan before it died.

No... I'll try it tomorrow with a newly purchased external hard drive.

I'll check that out... I have had a problem before when dust collected and the computer froze

It's a dell... the sound was a high pitched constant noise... i had another dell that stopped loading due to the fan... i didn't hear that noise though, wasn't from the fan... it was from the cpu.

This computer is at my work so I can't test it right now... baddog if i can access that computer tomorrow no doubt will I back it up...

Could be a fan seized and it's causing it to overheat or a powersupply?

                      Sounds like a heat issue.

It was the hard drive... pulled it out and put it into another computer. Same thing... I'm getting the data extracted right now and hope they can get it all...

Thanks for the comments... not sure what caused the hardrive to completely freeze... maybe overheat or something.
