you can easily find out whether the sites are hosted on one server (multiple ip's) by checking out mac address of the lan card. so, the solution is one IP - one LAN card.

It's been longer than that actually. Google's director of technology noted in a slashdot interview from 2002 that the IPs are not considered in their indexing process.
