    Thanks in Advance...

Fake check? Get robbed when they show up?

When did Craigslist become a toilet bowl of scammers. I used to sell a lot of used stuff there. Dealt with great people. One post this morning and the first 3 replies are scammers trying to pay with checks all with a different story...

In my earlier days with nothing but spare time on my hands I would have fucked around with these guys big time and screwed up their 'fun'...

They give you a bogus check, the bank cashes it and a few weeks later the bank realizes that is fake and you end up eating that amount of money + you lost what you are selling.

I ask about something similar to this over the weekend, but they wanted to give me a money order to buy my boat.
I ended up selling my boat to a local, for cash.

Is this guy out of town?
The guys name wouldn't happen to be John Russellss, would it?

This was posted in my thread by clubchicks....kinda how it works

Just got another fucker to respond.

      Hello,
Thanks for the prompt response,I'm really sorry for the late
response.I am very glad to hear that the item is still available for
sale and I am okay with the firm price you intend to sell the item
andI will like you to know that i intend to make an outright purchase
of the item immediately and ill like you to delete the posting of the
item from the web asap.I anticipate that a certified check or
cashier's check will be issued out to you by my bank and my secretary
would have it sent out via express mail or ups once it has been issued
out to you by my bank and as for the moving my mover will come for the
pick up at your location upon your confirmation of receiving the
payment and i don't want you to look for any other buyer.i would have
love to come down for the pickup but am not chanced to do that now but
am satisfied with your description of the item, ill instruct my bank to
issue out the payment to you as soon as i get the necessary details
for the payment making and I would have love to come down and look at
the item myself and pick it up but i'm a very busy individiual with
work and other obligations so inorder words i have a mover that
handles my shipment, they will be the one to pick up the item from your
location once the payment has been confirmed and it would be in an
overdraft that will include the shipping fees that would be needed to
have the item picked up from your location by a prepaid local mover so
ill like you to get back at me with the details below:
      1.....Full Name:
      2......Address:
      3.....City:
      4....State:
      5......Zipcode
6......Valid Phone Numbers(Both Home and Cell):
Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.I look forward to read
from you with the requested details asap.
      Regards....

      Nope no John..... yet.

They apparently 'hire' a local mover to pick up the item so who knows where these scammers are. I was pretty shocked how quickly they responded to the ad. I learned about Craigslist autoresponders through Google today... lol

Damn they were going to pull this crap with a boat! Brass balls...

CL is turning into a waste land. I was looking for a house to rent in Philly and responded to a few ads. One of them responded back with an application and said there was a $100 fee, but please mail the application back with a money order (no check) and they would call me to set up a time to show the place. Normally I ignore those scams but when i emailed, back, I got the exact same response... thieves!

With your case, I would just keep playing with him. What they will do is send you a FAKE money order or draft a check using someone elses account number. The bank with cash it thinking its real until they discover its fake or fraud, then you are fucked. Meanwhile, your shit is on a van going to some shipping company.

Im surprised CL hasnt done more to step in, I bet there is a huge number of people that are scammed on a daily basis. If you don't believe me, put a cell phone for sale and see how many emails you get with "what is your final asking price" emails

Personally I hate scammers and love to play with them. What I would do is give the address to a local non-chain restaurant and tell them you have someone else who is going to offer more, but if they come and pick it up first, it is theirs. Then sit and watch the drama unfold. Then email them back and apologize you gave the wrong address, and give them an address to some other place and call the local police and say you think you are being scammed and have the police and the scammer van meet

Do not accept any type of payment other than cash or wire transfer.

I got cash, but still went to the bank and had them give the cash to the teller and then put it in my account. I did this because you never know when you are being passed bogus money.
It's fucked up you have to do business this way, but unfortunately that is the way things have come to be.

How about that other scam where dorky college kids get hookers off craigslist to rob then, but when they fight back they shoot them.

I recently tried to sell a Solid wood TV unit. It was very nice and in great condition, worth 600 new. I had it for a year posted it for 300 to just get it out the house. I got so many freaks asking me if I don't sell it in a week can they have it, or I'll give you 50 for it. I took it to a consignment store and they solid it for 400 in a week. They charged 20% of the sale but it was worth it to not have people emailing me all day asking for hand outs. Telling me about there whole life and how fucked they are that they need my TV unit.

YES! my friend sold his old camera, and a hot girl purchased it from him. She talked down the price and seemed very normal. They exchanged money for camera at the mall and I met him for lunch. When he went to pay for lunch the cashier would not take the money. It was FAKE!!! really good fakes too! Only thing missing was the line that said USA down the bill and when she marked it with that marker BLACK!!! The girl paid with $10's and $20's he didn't even think to double check.

The scam goes further, they overpay you and ask for the difference back. Since the payment is bogus you're effectively giving them money for nothing.
