If not, what do you use, another competiting service, custom, what?
TIA
I am a big fan of Cloud computing. The EC2/ S3 is great. Pay for what you use in terms of bandwidth.
Amazon claims this is the same scalable storage infrastructure as they use for their regular Amazon.com site.
The only small drawbacks I see are the costs associated with uploading or moving around content and also the fact that there is no guarantee your data will not be lost.
SmugMug photo service claims to be saving $500K+ per year by using S3
Amazon says the s3 was designed to provide scalability, high availability, and low latency at drastically reduced costs.
I'm using Mosso.com. They have cloud solutions that start much cheaper. Their bandwidth is more expensive but until your site is bringing in traffic it is cheaper. It is also not proprietary so you can take your hosting wherever should you choose to. Also, no complex API to learn. For serious traffic Mosso also offers a grid solution that lets you scale as you go. You just pay for the bandwidth and don't worry about when you need another server or load balancing.
