Just last week, the Omnibus Public Lands Bill was voted on and failed to pass the majority vote. Senator Harry Reid, very sneakily reopened it and attached it to another bill to be voted on tomorrow, March 16th.

This bill plans to close over 2 million acres of public land and designate it as wilderness. Meaning no hunting, fishing, or offroad vehicle access will be permitted. And it will cost billions of dollars to the US taxpayers to enact and enforce the closure. This bill will close PUBLIC LAND that is open right now to you and your children to hunt, fish, hike, camp, ride dirtbikes, ATVs, or other offroad vehicles on.

Shit, the government already does a bunch of stupid and fucked up things with my tax money... my taxes probably payed for a couple of bullets or went towards a bomb that vaporized some little Iraqi kid while he was sitting on his bed watching Dora. Preserving land in my country so it can stay lookin' pretty and shit and help the animals stop gettin' all fucked up is the very least of my worries about my tax dollars. For those who are wondering: 2 million acres is slightly less than 0.1% of total US land size.

Aside from that, while the original post in this thread implies the land would be "closed off", that isn't actually true. In fact, the bill included the establishment of new hiking trails, and the protection of existing ones. Also, it included an amendment stating that lands now open to hunting and fishing would stay open for hunting and fishing.

As for the bit about vehicles (just about the only part in the original post that is actually true), anyone who has ever hiked knows just how much vehicles can damage previously unspoiled lands.

Jason Altmire (D-Pa.) designed to ensure that the omnibus would not close off lands that are already open to hunting and fishing. Rahall said the inclusion of the provision helped clear up many of the concerns some groups, including the National Rifle Association, had with the measure.

The answer is quite simple: because it's pretty fucking hard to hunt, fish or hike when there's no nature left. So it isn't really surprising that you, someone who "doesn't care for hunting at all", do not support this bill.
