I was with SurpassHosting for 4 years and never had problems. The 1 USD for a year promo it's to fish for clients obviously though ;)

They ARE cheap, but they are good although they WILL pull the "too much RAM, must go dedi" card on you if your site is "too" popular.

Why was the database lost? and why didn't you have a backup? and why don't you know how to fix it yourself? They never charged me for support, but I do know that there are certain things they do charge for, but it's things such as changing main domain in the account and other random things that shouldn't even happen...
