I usually make it 900-950 to allow for a little bit of background and wiggle room on 1024 res monitors

if its a page with a lot of text, i go for 970-980px, because that leaves me enough margins on both side to handle the background/text margin/transitions

if its something that is ment to be skimmed or linkbaited - like a picture blog or gallery, I try and keep it down to 780-800 because if its wider, the human eye skip the sides = people dont see your banners or menu = low CTR and High bouncerate

          Use "max-width" in your css.

Use it in conjunction with a % width and it will scale down but never scale too wide.

Isn't that the point of css? With the images floating and the width variable, it essentially becomes the option of the viewer. They can resize their browser and the images will wrap on their own according to the width available.

              Kinda like this: http://www.9xs.net/thumbs.html
