most unversity campuses nowadays have wireless services. hang out by some of their lounges and find ways to ride the network for free. their focus is on accessibility, not security

Thanks but I need something I can hookup a laptop to and access from inside the camper for a couple hours a day.

depends on what you can live with. I use a T-Mobile pocket PC on the road. You can view a webpage and use SSH terminal access. Not great but it works. They also have a pc card that will work on a laptop. Might be worth a look.

            Have you considered GPRS?

I started a thread about this last month I think... There are some guys that map out all the free wireless networks... It seems really complicated and hacker-like -- but I suppose it's probably possible to use one of these map programs and jump from network to network during your travels... I never tried this, but seems like it could work if you were sneaky about maping your journey... but my guess is the good camping spots in rural areas will not have the wireless networks that you need (like a Starbucks)... I bet tho if you are creative you can figure it out... There was the Ricochet network a couple of years ago, but they are back into Beta testing with it... wireless cellular service is still a joke as far as I know... Also the wireless Palm Pilot was a flop -- or so I was told in NY by the salespeople... I saw a satellite cell phone once in a magazine -- who knows maybe there is some James Bond shit out there yet -- but I have a feeling that mapping wireless networks is your best bet.

What about the old style cups that you hook over a payphones handset? Wouldn't that work pretty good if I had like a AOL account and could have access numbers pretty much anywhere? Just pull up to a payphone and dial, the kids would have to stand beside the phone and feed it quarters I guess. LOL

Sprint PCS there connection is 144k not fast but better than dialup. If its only for a few hours per day it may suffice.

I have verizons Interent service when traveling, we use it while driving down the road to read GFY and keep up with email etc, Got it while at the Convention in Vegas, Works very nice, and have used it in drives from Cincinnati to DC out in NY in Vegas (of course) and in drives from Cinci to Mich almost all the way without to much trouble dropping out etc. Cost about 100 a month for unlimited access so even though it's a little slow you don't have to worry about how long your connected etc.
SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.

My folks and I have split the cost of a new luxury bus for their retirement. My dad has done a ton of researching for Net connectivity for a laptop. He decided to go with something Sprint has going. They gave him some software to load on a laptop, connect the phone, and boom, you're there. Not monster speeds but better than dialup.

He'd looked into some satellite alternatives for broadband, but the costs were more than he wanted to deal with ($8K or so and then $99/mo).

If you've got a camper, if you're parked when using the net, couldn't you use DirectTV or Dish Network type access? Aren't they fast? You'd just have to aim the shit, right? Or am I totally wrong?
I've seen some campsites now that advertise wireless network access (802.11b), which is pretty cool

Its not worth the headache. I just said fuck it and went with a nationwide isp with dialups all over the damn place.

If true wireless broadband every hits, I will move into a bus and travel the country on my dive bar tour while following certain bands like a deadhead.

GPRS is a service run on the GSM net used by mobile phones - what the fuck does that have to do with the size of the country

I've seen some campsites now that advertise wireless network access (802.11b), which is pretty cool
I did research into this. These dishes require complex aiming by a technician... the idea seems simple enough, but the more you read about the aiming process, the less attractive it seems to attempt to do this...

I've had a similar fantasy since highschool... Only I'd need a bus with a shower
