I do it all the time, but not without a backup. I have frequent snapshots using rsnapshot and in one important example I use SVN.

Sometimes I wing it. Nothing like making a quick edit to a script then trying to save the file only to get a "drive full" message and the filesize goes to 0. You'd think I would learn not to edit like that anymore but I am not very bright.
