google came out and said recently that it prefers that people don't mod rewrite url's and that it would possibly be better for your search results if you didn't rewrite

d-null, this is not exactly what they said All they said is that you can do more harm with poorly rewritten URLs than if you just live them as they were. But yes, they wrote this in such a misleading way

guess we should try to find the link so that everyone can interpret it as they like, but it seemed to me when I read it that they were responding to the fact that so many people worry about mod rewriting wordpress urls to supposedly be more search engine friendly and they were trying to put the point across that it didn't make any difference.... I could have misinterpreted their intention though

It may not be the only search engine but its the only one with traffic AND the only one worth mentioning.

Somebody up there just posted a link to it. I think the main problem is people are reading this party only:

Does that mean I should avoid rewriting dynamic URLs at all?
                              That's our recommendation, ...
But obviously they should read on:

... unless your rewrites are limited to removing unnecessary parameters, or you are very diligent in removing all parameters that could cause problems.
In the article there are a few examples of poorly rewritten URLs which could cause crawling problems.

A comment to this article that I like very much is this one:

Ready for the controversy? I think this is a ridiculous article coming from you guys! To say we shouldn't rewrite URLs because we may rewrite irresponsibly. Seriously?

That is like saying people shouldn't drive because if you do it wrong, you may cause an accident. Come on. ...
I couldn't agree more, what about you?

Google likes html static pages over active but also likes updated original content. So if you can update your site weekly with a static page then that would be the best. But in reality active is needed to keep the site active.
