Weird firefox issue

instead of the arrow keys moving the page down a line or whatever at a time, there's a cursor on the page and it progresses oddly.

Anyone know a way to fix this?

There is an option to allow text marking with keyboard in FF.

If you like the keyboard you could try http://vimperator.mozdev.org Its an addon which allows you to use your FF 100% with keyboard. No need for mouse anymore. Thats how I use it ;)
