A bit old but here goes anyway:

3 men needed to spend the night in a motel room but niether had enough money so they decided to split the cost and share a room. They went to the front desk and found that the cost for the room was $30.00 so they each put in $10.00 and went to the room. After they left the clerk realized that the room was on sale for $25.00 so he gave the belhop $5.00 to return to the men. The belhop didnt know how to divide the money equally so he decided to give the men each $1.00 and put $2.00 in his pocket.

So, each of the 3 men paid $10.00 but were refunded $1.00 each which means they actually only paid $9.00 each...3 x $9.00= $27.00 + the $2.00 the belhop put in his pocket = $29.00. What happened to the other dollar??

Well I would think that you would minus the $2.00 from $27.00 which would equal $25 the amount of the room

of course if Saturn is not aligned with Pluto and it is the fourth month in Siberia..then none of this would work out right

No no no no no no no no....
Starting backwards from the $30 that they originally paid, they each got $1.00 dollar back. $30 MINUS $3 = $27. The bellhop kept the other $2 bucks which is where your missing money is at.

No. It's not $27 PLUS $2 bucks.... it's $27 MINUS $2 bucks... bringing us back to $25 bucks that was the actual price for the room.
