If your currently using Sendmail, its time to patch it up, update it, or the best solution -- replace it.
Anyone running sendmail should strongly consider switching to Qmail + Vpopmail.
The transistion is usually pretty seamless & a sendmail alias is created (so you don't have to go back an edit scripts/programs that use sendmail paths). Qmail is just plain easier to administrate as well.
Vpopmail allows for your mail accounts to be VIRTUAL ACCOUNTS rather than system accounts (that are found in your /etc/passwd file). In most cases your mail username & password get sent across the net in plain text. If this is a system account login/pw.. woo.. trouble.
IMAP-SSL and POP-SSL can also be setup so that your actual email messages can be encrypted (when you send/recv them) over the net as well.
SquirrelMail could also be setup if you wanted to have HotMail-Like webmail access to your mail in addition to IMAP/POP.
