Video Editing Software

Is there a software that allows you to have multiply story lines enabling you to save multiple video clips per one edit... this way I can pull different parts from the raw footage for my foot fetish stuff as well as my free clip from the movie and maybe pull a separate clip all in one screen shot of the software program.


Forgive me if I am explaining it incorrectly but I will be happy to further explain if you don't understand what type of software I am looking for...

Becky they call those "sequences" in Adobe Premiere Pro, and I believe they are called the same thing in Apple's Final Cut Pro. You capture the footage once and all the clips reside in a bin or a folder and then you can have multiple sequences each with it's own timeline with different edits of the same raw footage. This feature is standard in newer versions of most modern full featured editing programs.

Oh ok I get it now. I would go with Vegas. The great thing about Vegas is you can learn just enough to do what you want to do and then later you can get as deep as you want.

yes, any pro software will allow you to make 'creative' decisions without affecting the raw footage. you are then able to save these decisions.

simply put you may move the footage anywhere you want on the time line, cut, paste, anything you want. then save a reference file to pull those decisions back up as needed.

I happen to use 'vegas video' while other might prefer other software.

Thank you guys very much for helping with this I think I understand a little better now what I am looking for... Still open for anyone's suggestions and opinions on the best editing software.

For Windows, the best bet is to download a trial version of both Premiere Pro CS3 and the newest version of Vegas and see which interface you like better. They both can edit native HDV and they each have a suite of software which allows you to do other things like author DVDs and do sound editing. I have been a using Premiere for years and I find it very easy to learn and intuitive, plus it has great workability with Photoshop and Encore DVD authoring software but Vegas is also a popular option that some people find easier to become proficient with at first as well as it may be more inexpensive to purchase for the first time.

yes, I messed around with the adobe stuff several times and never really got going on it. had a few pros give me lessons, no luck. a few minutes of lessons with vegas I was cutting away. -bmb

I felt the same way, I really want to be an all adobe shop but the learning curve seemed steep.

I am always amazed when I hear people say that Premiere is hard to learn. I find Premiere Pro so easy and obvious. I remember checking out Vegas way back in ver. 3.0 and I thought that it was a mess of an interface, especially back then. After all it was originally developed from an audio editing program and it sure looked like it back then! In any case all the editing apps are so similar nowadays, anyone who edits routinely should be able to pick up the basics for one or the other one in minutes and be competent in days if you spend time with it. Only thing I would really have to re-learn which would slow me down a bit if I ever switched apps (fat chance) is all the keystroke commands for Premiere Pro. I use custom keyboard shortcuts all the time so my fingers can work without looking down and I save a lot of time jumping around the timeline and workspace with a minimum of fatigueing wasted mouse movements.

I suppose I'll throw in my vote for Vegas here. Obviously not everyone thinks the same but I found Vegas to be much more intuitive as a beginner.. most keyboard shortcuts and basic navigation of the program were exactly as I expected them to be in a video production/editing program.

Like someone else said though.. download a demo of each before you buy anything.

Sony Vegas all the way. It's easy, fast, doesn't mess with the raw footage. Most porn producers don't need fancier things like avid, etc... I think the learning curve for Premiere is to high.

I'll be really honest here with you. I don't care for adobe's biz habits or really anything about adobe. if I could get off PS I would in a heart beat. and I've used PS since version 3.5.

remember when adobe got busted for changing the root directory for pass authentication? when I went to CS1 the fucking app went on line every time I opened it to call home. when I wouldn't let it go online, it crashed. so I had to let it call home all the time.

then it would drop the registration every 3 or 4 days so I had to re-register the fucking app by phone. I went back to 7.1.

then I foolishly dropped $1200 on premier pro, because I didn't learn my lesson, spent a few hundred on sessions from a pro and had all the same fucking problems I had had with cs1 and more.

adobe told me they would only help me if I bought the 'expert' phone support. I sent them a nice email thanking them for introducing me to vegas video.

vegas has been great and I like soundforge and the was the apps work seamlessly side by side.


btw: one 10 min vegas lesson from dean capture and I was editing all the footage I need too.
