    Does the google bot use a particular html standard?

    for instance - xhmtl1.0 strict

    what is best for google?

    doesn't matter really for Google..
    bots follow links and store pages in it's cache "as is"..

    standards apply for developers and clients(browsers)

      the less heavy page with code the better though... even for bots load time and parsing through text

              I'm says that bots interpret HTML loosely as much as possible.. SE's job to find strings of text within cached pages (indexing) and what bots get out of pages are proper links to follow.. standards are followed by developers to properly render pages in client apps.
