    Deviated Septum?

I found out yesterday when I visited the docs office for a sinus infection I caught last weekend that I have a deviated septum and he is sending me to a specialists to have it corrected. I am going in next week.
I have heard that I will probably have some black eyes for a couple of weeks. This doesn't sound like it's going to be fun at all

Anyone ever had one of these? How did it go for you?

My wife looks at it on the bright side. She said she won't have to keep belting me when I start snoring and she can finally sleep without me waking her up..

I have one of those from all the fights I got into as a kid. Let me know how it goes and the costs. Is your insurance going to cover it?

Mine is too. I can barely breathe through my left nostril, but I haven't really been bothered to do anything about it. Being Canada, I'm sure I could get it fixed any time I want.

I had a deviated septum and had the corrective surgery for it a couple of years ago. One of the best things I've ever done. I sleep much better since I had it fixed. Still snore like a motherfucker, apparently. Money well spent. I'd definitely recommend it. Your quality of life will improve.

          deviated septum

thats why you wear dark glasses. have fun.
A Chinese man calls his boss and says, "Me no work, Me sick." The boss said, "When I get sick, I fuck my wife, why not try that". 2 hours later, the Chinese man calls back, "Me feel better, you have nice house."

Never underestimate the power of human ingratitude.

I had deviated septum surgery around 12 years ago.

I'm allergic and right now I have permanent sinus infection, I'm in a condition which doctors prepare me to do a FESS (endoscopic sinus surgery) soon, for either one or both sinuses.

The deviated septum correction didn't really help me, I still have problems with breathing through my nose, but that's also related to my allergies.

Make sure your sinuses don't require a surgery before correcting the septum.
You could/should do two at once then, heh.

btw anyone here had sinus surgery/FESS done?
                I don't use ICQ anymore.

This sounds like a pretty common thing. I guess I don't have much to worry about, just some minor pain and maybe raccoon eyes for a week or so....

I didn't have any black eyes when I had it done and mine was a lot more complicated then a regular deviated septum. And the pain was not minor. When I woke up felt like someone smashed my nose in with a hammer.

But it is worth it for sure. I can now breathe through my nose which I couldn't do for most of my life. I sleep better also because of it. My insurance covered it as well.

This is great information. I suspect my boyfriend has it as well. He's had his nose broken god knows how many times (fighting, football (soccer) and rugby). He can barely breath through his nose - breathes through his mouth mostly and snores so bad we can't sleep in the same bed all night most nights. He's going to the doctor in a few weeks for it, but I'm going to have him read this thread so he's not as scared ;o) I suspect that's the reason he's 46 and never had it done LOL.

i had mine corrected in 01 and it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be. i never realized until it was all healed that i could barely breathe out of one of my nostrils prior to the fix. much of my sinus troubles from the past cleared up and never bothered me again. i had very little bruising, just swelling around the area and under my eyes for a few days. your down time will be more like a week. you will worship your doctor after it is fixed and your wife will be indebted as well. good luck sweetie and don't be scared

Hey thanks, not really scared, just wondering how it went with others. I will be real happy to be able to breath through my nose instead of my mouth and I hope the snoring cuts back some.

A whole slew of my girl friends, as in girls I was friends with, in DC had to have surgrey to fix their deviated septum.

It didn't seem to affect them very much, as a few weeks later they would be back doing what caused them to have the problem in the first place.

I had a septoplasty. I too had the constant sinus infections, often lasting three months at a time, and now it is no longer a problem. I can breathe quite well, and when I got a cold or allergy is runs its course in normal time. I didn't get black eyes, only bummer is having your nose full of wadding for a week or more (and not fun when they take it out, but it is a rush when you breathe through your nose for the first time.)

I also have that, I need to have the surgery done, yet I feel like afterwards I might get a sensitive nose in the wintertime, is it so, or just lousy fear? If you press the nose with a finger or so, is it kinda fragile, or as normal?

Totally standard surgery... I had an ethmoidectomy and my septum fixed in all of 2 hours outpatient surgery last January. They filled my nose with this burgundy gel packing that dissolves over time. When all was healed I felt great, could breath, had no sinus infections. It was well worth it. The two weeks after the surgery will turn you into a booger aficionado because you will be pulling things the size of golf balls out of your nose and it feels awesome.. that could just be me though.

one a good note - at least it's not a deviated scrotum

it is the opposite, you will not have the constant runny nose and need to carry tissue everywhere. i couldnt push the tip of my nose up to make a pig face until after 6 months from i can remember (not that i need to be making that face anyways). it just made the bridge sore and felt like it didn't want to go that direction at all. you can't really rub your nose for awhile without it hurting a little or being sore but who cares, it heals and is so worth it

not if you take the strong pain meds they give you you won't feel a thing
