    HDMI help

Just got our media room setup with 1080p projector, receiver, 7/1 sound & blue ray etc..
Sat. company installed HD dvr today and attached it to receiver with hdmi cable. Problem is picture looks great but no sound.... Do I have to run an optical cable for the sound as well as hdmi for the picture ? I looked on the back of the amp and the blue ray, which is on the other hdmi input is using hdmi for the picture and coax. for the sound from what I can make out...

If it is an HDMI to HDMI connection it will carry sound and video. It is probably just the settings on the TV. I know I have one HDMI in that is just video and had to manually set the audio input for that as it is DVI coming out of the cable box for that TV.

HDMI is just for picture ... The sound has other connections.

HDMI carries both audio and video, but when you have multiple combination of a/v inputs available, you often have to manually select the sources.

EPIC Fail... Geezuz... !! HDMI carries all the data not only for HD 1080p Picture, but for sound and other data too. If you are using HDMI, you do not need any other Video, Audio, or Optical cables. (All of these are now considered "old" technology.. even optical).

              Connect it like this :

BLU-RAY to Sound decoder / Dolby / DTS Box / Media Controler.
              TV to same.

Select the necessary source and you should see video. If you are not getting audio, it could be something as simple as speakers not selected, volume too low, etc.

A trickier problem though has to do with the sound format. Sometimes some sound decoders do not seem to detect the sound format (DTS, Dolby, THX, etc) and will play either have no sound at all, or a high pitched tone. Make sure that the sound format(s) your decoder supports are setup as defaults in your Blu-Ray player, and vice-versa.

Good luck and enjoy your awesome home theatre!

FAIL HDMI carries picture and audio. DVI -> HDMI carries only picture. HDMI->HDMI will carry both check your settings on the projector and your player.
