I want to install linux to my desktop/laptop but can't choice which distribution to use. Any suggestions

Nope just ordinary things,i don't want to install vista. I've checked RedHat but seems that is not free like it used to be

Try Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Fedora core...

Linux is free only if your time worth nothing.

People say Xubuntu or Ubuntu is easy to use for first time Linux cats... don't know if you are.

Actually i'm not new in linux, had redhat 8 years ago but i've had problems with my modem so i unstall it. Linux it's far more stable can't windows and all windows applications you can run in linux too.

There is a popular distribution called CentOS that is basically Redhat redistributed under a different license agreement, so you may want to try that. It's used on a lot of servers and stuff.

If you're a noob, just get the latest Ubuntu, it's great.

If you want the 3D stuff, you should try Kubuntu which uses KDE instead of GNOME for your GUI. You'll probably need a decent machine and a 3D video card for this though.

We still use FreeBSD on most of our servers, and I have a home install of Ubuntu just to mess around with, it's great.

if you are new in the linux area, go with ubuntu (gnome) or kubuntu(KDE).

My first suggestion is always Slackware.

But, if you are the Redhat sort, you will want CentOS if you want stability, or Fedora if you want to be more cutting edge.

I would strongly recommend the Fedora8 distribution and the KDE environment, easy to upgrade, plenty of applications, much better than Ubuntu or Debian for sure. Good luck!

The best thing going on the desktop right now is Ubuntu IMO... Great community for support too.

I'm have no idea why you would want to do that, but hey have at it.

For DEs, If you want KDE, you have that option. If you want XFCE, you have that option. If you want Gnome, well Pat dropped it because of it's hellish dependencies, but there are at least 3 third party packagers that offer Gnome for Slack... and of course the simple WMs like you mentioned.

No, it isn't for newbs, but it certainly isn't hard to install. It is actually easier IMO than those with pretty graphical installers. Hell of a lot faster too. 15 minutes or so on modest hardware... another 10 - 15 minutes for updates (20 or so packages vs. hundreds like most others).

Stability - unmatched. Packages are typically only updated for security reasons. Packaging - without a doubt the most flexible. True there is no dependency checking but some consider this a good thing.

Init scripts and other internals are all well documented. Kernel (yes by golly, they even offer the 2.6 version) is pure and the distro as a whole is rather unbloated.

I don't know, it just sounds like you really haven't looked at it since 96. You might be pleasantly surprised.

if you dont know what you're really doing, ubuntu is the only way to go.. the package manager you can install anything you want including dependencies with virtually a couple clicks. otherwise if you know how to run a tight ship, slackware was always my fav

Ubuntu or Kubuntu or Xubuntu.

I'd go with the Dapper version. It installs like a dream. Just burn the iso to disk, put in your CD/DVD drive, reboot while holding down the C key and all will be well.
