Let me change that. Who here is hosted somewhere that allows them to run a proxy server?

Unless you are doing something shady, I don't see any reason why a host wouldn't allow a proxy setup on a dedicated server...

^^^^^^^^ if you mean one for personal use.

If you mean a open php-proxy for the public you might have problems after the first complaint over a user. If you want that I'd look to see what other public proxies are using for hosting.

You don't like my posts? Put me on ignore or fuck right off. I'll say what I want.

PHP proxies will get you traffic but remember your IP is being used for the outbound connects. I bought about 10 of those sites (bargain price, too good to refuse) and they ended up putting a fairly excessive load on a P4 dedicated. Still trying to figure out what to do with them.

alot of hosts won't allow open proxies on them. i looked into starting some proxy sites myself, but didn't feel like hooking up on another dedicated just to upstart a few proxies...

BTW I've also caught some people using scripted fetches, they were up to about 100,000 by the time I blocked them. Probably querying multiple proxy sites so they don't get blocked by the site they're scraping. (In this case it was Google)

I doubt this is going to cause any problems with any host, unless you're using it for something devious that you're too chicken to do from your own IP.

Be sure to password protect that directory so only you can use it.

Sly: it was still a good deal, just not in the long run when every horny Persian (that's the majority of the traffic) is hitting it hard every day

If you have a dedicated you can run whatever you want. You're hosting company may have issues if you are doing something illegal or dubious. Are we talking HTTP proxy or something else? Why do you want to run a proxy on your server?
