I tried using that tool once and it only allows 500 links. Had to code my own script to do it instead.

Google sitemaps is good for SEO. It shows you what keywords people click on your site most from and your position for that keyword. And the keywords most searched and which position your site has on that keyword. So its good to see which keywords you must target.

It also allows Google to see with near absolute certainty which sites you own (or at least control), which may not be so good for SEO.

Well, considering that fundamentally SEO is manipulation of the search engines to try to achieve a better rank, ....

sorry rowan, could you go through through this in more simpler terms for me please,

I thought a sitemap only showed one site, yet I am pressuming you are saying it can also see other sites you run and thus is bad for seo as it can see they are linked. Is that what you are saying? If so how so?

Sitemaps are pretty useless in my opinion, they do zero, nada, for ranking and I never had problems with any site getting indexed. A good link structure makes sitemaps obsolete.

Add your site to the webmaster tools ? Mainstream, yes, adult...never ever.

Just don't add them using your Google account. Here is what you should do:

Specifying the Sitemap location in your robots.txt file

You can specify the location of the Sitemap using a robots.txt file. To do this, simply add the following line:

                                        Sitemap: <sitemap_location>

The <sitemap_location> should be the complete URL to the Sitemap, such as: http://www.example.com/sitemap.xml

This directive is independent of the user-agent line, so it doesn't matter where you place it in your file. If you have a Sitemap index file, you can include the location of just that file. You don't need to list each individual Sitemap listed in the index file.

Yup, that account ties all your sites together.

I've only added about 3 mainstream and 2 adult sites to my account for that reason. (Well, not solely... more that I don't want Google knowing EVERYTHING about me. )
