Okay, enough on the pragmatics and manners issues...

We can be grateful it's an actual business thread. So back to the focus:

First: I'm sure you all know this, but not all PHP is crappy - PHP is awesome, just some of the programs we've seen suck -

vBulletin, Wordpress - they all have a PHP backbone and work beautifully [mostly] - it's like the computer only being as smart as the programmer - a programmer with limited knowledge of the power of PHP will give you a crappy PHP program...

I know someone who liked this business directory program - not free as you asked but about $100 - http://www.phpmydirectory.com/ - and for a free option there's http://www.iscripts.com/directory/ which is free but charges for support/installation - but I don't know anyone who has used that one.

The PHP one is a better option all around - and we know first-hand how those freebies-with-paid-support programs can suck...

I'm stumped on the city guide script and could actually use one of those myself. Now that we've raised the tone of this thread maybe somebody will come in with some more suggestions because I could use a good city guide program too.
