best tutorials for creating wordpress templates?

I have a design that I want to use for word press, but I've had some issues getting it to set up properly. I can't afford to outsource it at this point so can any one point me to a simple how to on setting up a theme? I looked at a couple on google but I wasn't able to make much sense of it when I looked at the example theme I downloaded.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I would suggest starting here and progressing further through the Codex chapters. This is assuming you are knowledgeable in basic HTML and PHP.

If you do not know what the WP post loop is and how its basics work, then you're best off starting with: http://codex.wordpress.org/Blog_Design_and_Layout and working your way up.
