    Firewire

Does anyone have trouble with firewire harddrives or other firewire devices. I have a drive which seems to lock up or give the screen of death everytime I try and run something directly from the drive...

    Any suggestions?

I had the same problems with multiple OS's. Finally I decided to build my own firewire external drive.

Got a nice enclosure and a Western Digital 100gb drive with 8mb buffer.

No more problems. Fast as hell. Even been known to use it for editing video with my laptop.

it may also be your interface.

          No problems here.
SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.

Dude we have 16, 200 gig external HD's and they used to always fuck up on that sorry ass excuse of an OS... XP. We switched to 2000 pro and now they work... ok, they still don't work. But FUCK XP!

Actually we think it has something to do with over heating. We can use them all day long, switching them from machine to machine, reading, writing editing directly from them and then all of a sudden they drop off the network. We get pissed, slam it around a little, bang on it, and nothing will make it work. Then the next day after being off all night, it'll fire right up.

These damn things get so hot, I'm afraid it's going to melt right through the case. Yes... they get that hot.

What do you pay for one of those 200 gig externals? Are you using Western Digital's ?

We have an 80gigi Maxtor on our OS X Mac and it sucks! Locks up all the time. Did it on OS 9 also.

I think it is something to do with drivers and the drives going to sleep.

I buy the cheapest Maxtor externals, toss the drive and put in my own fast big HDs with one end of the case opened up for cooling.

No problems with XP Pro at all.
