Setting up nameservers... help!

I setup a nameserver for a new .com domain a bit more than 48 hrs ago and it's still not up... is this normal?

I setup a new .net domain 4hrs after I setup the .com and the .net was up in 26hrs...

What have you done so far to see if it is up?

if you're talking with respect to domain name resolution, the standard "accepted" is 24-48 hours, however i read an official statement once from networksolutions or something that stated up to 4 days.

still, even in some areas 4 days isn't enough

I tried visiting the domain name... but now that you ask, I'm assuming there's other ways to check?

Are you sure the domain is set up correctly? Did you try a trace route? What is the domain? Ever had so many questions directed at you in one post?

did you set up an actual domain name server, or just modify an existing one?

i.e.

"yes, i made dns1.madmonkeysex.biz"

or

"no, i added url.com to my existing name server"

i added the new domain to an existing nameserver...
i'm sure i set it up correctly and i set up a second domain 5 hrs later which worked fine.

i did a traceroute, and i got results, but i have no clue what the results mean.

If that's the case then I would wait a bit longer to see if it still needs to fully propagate. Or you could tell us the domain name if it's not top secret.

if you're not already doing it, you can point your system to the domain name server that your name is set on, it should be able to find it that way. i had to do that once, until everything propogated. that sucked

i.e. if your domain service's main dns is dns1.poop.com then add that as a domain name server on your own computer. it really won't bother anything, i'd make it primary. you can change it back if you want to, but there's really no reason to.

When you say "set up" are you talking about registering a domain and telling it your nameservers or are you directly modifying start-of-authority records for the domain? Can you ping it from the box it is set up on?

I'm assuming it just hasn't propagated yet.

I see a couple of problems...

First, one of your name servers does not appear operational: ns9.eb1.biz doesn't resolve

Secondly, the webserver you're pointing the domain to does
not appear to be accepting connections. Telneting to 128.121.247.56 on port 80 gets a connection refused.

and how would I fix that?

I set up a .net domain on the same account and it works fine... it's on a virtual hosting account.

Hmmm, the webserver part appears to be working now, although it seems to be serving an empty file.

It works when I skip the dns resolution part of the process. If I force my system to know that www.cum-cutie.com = 128.121.247.56 it works. There seems to be something screwy with your dns servers though, are both your names set up on ns*.eb1.biz?

your page works fine here in Philly Pa. (east coast USA), but you have nothing on that page........ Not Good

Upload some text on something just to identfy the page and give you something to see when you check to see if it is working


I always upload something like

"This is index.html
Domain.com"

or some such B.S. just to be sure there is something there.

don't depend on a host to always put up a default index.html

There seems to be something screwy with your dns servers though, are both your names set up on ns*.eb1.biz?

Both are setup on ns9.eb1.biz and ns10.eb1.biz
but the second works fine...

i'm assuming that if it's fine in Philly, it'll be fine in Canada soon too? As you can all tell, I'm clueless when it comes to this shit... but I'm learning, thanks
