Sure, while millions of people are starving to death in Africa, and 30% of the population is HIV-infected in certain countries, we should all go give our money to some pets.

While those are noble causes, the odd thing is that it's helping those who do not need it nearly as much as, for instance, the children in Africa do.
For instance, I believe that the Make A Wish foundation works hard to give children with life-threatening illnesses a better life. Meanwhile, children in poor countries are dying because they can't afford medical treatment of any kind. Some of the diseases killing them could easily be treated with only a small fraction of the cost of making a US kid a bit happier. But why is making one kid happier more important than saving the lives of a dozen others? Simply because those children were born in a place where they didn't have any chances to begin with?

                Back off.

Giving someone shit because they donate their hard earned money and TIME to a charity of their choice? What kind of fucked up logic is that?

Donating money to the children of Africa and the vast AIDS epidemic will not solve any problems. The issue is much deeper than that.

Damn, criticizing someone because they give to charities...

Well, in my humble opinion helping those who need it most is generally the best thing to do. I may be wrong, but I do not see the mere fact of people/animals being closer to home as making them more deservant of help.

Yes indeed... its a deeper problem then that... something that only G8 leaders can solve...

However.... donating $10 000 to an organization that take care of children of 3rd world countries might save hundreds of lives...

                    Now... pets.... or children...?
If you have money to give... select the right cause....

Make a Wish - Hello Kayla, can you volunteer this week?

By the way, I do agree that the real problems with the 3rd world can only be solved through international politics.
Much of the poverty of the 3rd world is caused by the large trading barriers the rich countries of the world have set up to protect their own economies, while they still try to gain as much as possible from the 3rd world countries (cheap labor, natural resources). While these trading barriers are in place, no structural progress can be made.
One could say much of our prosperity is derived from their poverty.

Ofcourse, our primary concern should be changing that situation. However, meanwhile, millions are dying, and with relatively little effort we could save many of those lives.

I cannot believe I am getting so much CRAP because I volunteer at an animal rescue place!

At least I support SOME charitites! I am not like you bigger webmasters raking in the cash. I run a SMALL amateur site and am waiting to launch a joint-venture site. I make in a month what most of you make in a DAY! I am not rich, I end up giving more of my TIME than of my money...at least I am doing SOMETHING tho!

So sorry I cannot save 3rd World countries by my lonesome!
