Celeron vs AMD...

I've been told that Celeron sucks, but does it really suck all that bad?

I'm looking for a new laptop. I want something cheap. No gaming, no video work, nothing fancy will be done on it. Browsing, emails, word processing, spreadsheets, etc. The most "intensive" thing I'll be doing it cropping/resizing images.

All the cheap laptops have a Celeron processor. Would it really be that crummy for this kind of moderate usage?

no, i bought a nice HP laptop with a Celeron for my GF last Christmas for 400 bucks. It's pretty nice and for what you described it will perform fine.

Celeron's always have gotten a bad rap, at one time the only difference between a Celeron versus a Pentium was the built on cache of the pentium. I had one of these Celerons back in 99, you could overclock the shit out of them!

Celeron is a product by a microprocessor company ....

AMD is a microprocessor company.

You can't compare a company to a product from a rival company.

I have used Intel and AMD for years ... both processor companies have jumped on each other and beaten each other. Currently Intel have the faster processors, but AMD ones are cheaper. So, it depends. For the kind of thing you're describing, the AMD processor line is probably the best one because of cost... even at lower spec level.

But for the top end work ... Intel shit is the best ...

I think it is worth it to just spend the extra tiny bit of money and get an Intel dual core. You can still get a cheap laptop with a dual core, and they are a much better processor.

You can get a dual core Acer for as little as $599 Canadian at Futureshop.

You're comparing a laptop that has xp on it last christmas to a laptop one would get today with only Vista available.

Vista requires so much more juice to run that celeron's are giving every laptop maker a bad rep. Word processing is annoying on them.. lagged text readout up to a few sentences long in some case. So imagine how difficult image resizing and other webmaster duties would be.

He would NEED a dual core. Even a single core athlon is not enough. albeit no text input lag but still a slow ass machine.

Futureshop has many cool deals on laptops now. Go Check out the 17 inch acer with dual core athlons. 699. cant complain. Or if you want a little more quality check out the 749 17" HP. Dual core athlon as well. Drop a two year service contract on it and you'll be game to go under $1000

I wouldn't recommend that one. It's not the well built line of Acer Aspires. Keyboard bends, casing bends in certain spots when picked up. Not healthy. The 17" Version has new tough chassis.

I'm getting ready to buy a new desktop so I would love to know why and what is differnet .. I run photoshop and grapics programs but need the capibility for some cad stuff as well..

Yeah, I was wondering how Vista would run on a Celeron. If I did opt for a Celeron, I'd look for an older model with XP on it.

The 17" models are nice, but too big. Even the 15.4" models are too big. I don't need a desktop replacement, just something I can use in front of the TV or at a café.

I just ordered a notebook with a Celeron, and I'm confident it'll be fine. Saved me roughly 33% of the cost opting for a Celeron as opposed to a comparable duo.

I realized laptops are more about having a mobile computing presence than having a mobile computing powerhouse.

And I'd give mine no more than a year's life expectancy, so why go all out?
