Useful plug-ins for WordPress

Setting up a blog and looking through all of the available plug-ins. Anyone recommend some awesome plug-ins that make life easier?

Right now I'm looking for a plug-in that allows all external links to open up in a new window. It sounds pretty simple, maybe it's a feature right in WordPress? I couldn't find it.

Next I'm looking for a plug-in that allows you to easily add images to posts. Basically I want to eliminate the task of needing to upload an image via FTP every time it needs to be listed in a post. I'm looking through various image plug-ins right now, they all seem to do something close to what I want, but I'm not sure if it's exactly right. I'll play around and see what I can find, but if anyone can recommend a simple image uploading plug-in I would really appreciate it.
