My mom applied to be the teacher in space. So, it always hit home.

I think I was around that age as well, and just happened to be home sick that day watching it on tv when it blew up. I think the teachers name was Christena McCallef or something, I remember there was a girl in our school with the same or similar name.

NASA will soon complete a yearlong, $5 million study of space shuttle crew escape systems. The possible revisions include the method of extraction at sea, the addition of ejection seats for the entire crew, and the separation and parachuting of the entire space shuttle fuselage forward of the cargo bay. There are no guarantees that NASA will implement any of the study's recommendations.

It seems they were almost doomed from the start, it said the some foam or something came off and hit the wing on takeoff and such, but they didn't expect it to have any effect on re-entry. It makes ya wonder how important it is to abort a mission when something happens.

But you are right I was reading the bios of the astronauts themselves and it's amazing who they were and their education levels. Hell because of the experiments there were 2 doctors on board.

Ironicly, today is 4 days later than the day the space shuttle challenger blew up on take off.

Sad day, 16 minutes from home.

no tracking or data sharing after the explosion... if the capsule stayed in tack they would probably have a chance of escaping, but that doesnt sound good.

Yeah this sure does bring back the memories and the feelings after the Challenger explosion. It's one of those things in your lifetime when you always remember where you were when you heard.

The Columbia is the oldest shuttle in the fleet. It's first flight was in 1981.

There's always been a blurb that at liftoff there was a piece of insulating foam on its external fuel tank came off and was believed to have hit the left wing of the shuttle, that perhaps it did enough damage that the stress of their re-entry might of caused this. They were 37 miles up and traveling at 6 times the speed of sound.

They are already showing pictures of debris.

I have family members that were part of the debris recovery in the Atlantic after the Challenger explosion.

It's a sad day. I haven't had a lump in my chest like this since 9/11.

An odd note with this.. it was Jan 28, 1986 when the Challenger exploded and Jan 27, 1967 when the Apollo spacecraft burned. All days within a week of each other.

At 8am this morning, there was a loud boom and it made my house shake and then a rumbling like thunder that lasted for about 15 seconds, i was like wtf was that... i go outside and look around, dont see anything.

About 20 minutes later I see the video on tv, made me feel sick.

There are several reports of debris on the ground just a few miles from my house.

I was 21 years old the day Challenger exploded, was on a tech call for a paging company and in the clients office watching the whole thing. I remember just going numb right then. Similar to 9-11.

I was 25..working in a large office. A woman who had been listening to a radio came out of her cubicle and said "The Challenger exploded". My boss went to the conference room and turned on the TV. We spent most of the day in there...watching.
