tech gurus - router / dsl problems

I keep losing my Internet connection. I am with Bell Sympatico. Tech support is the usual Paki runaround.

I used to just set my modem in bridge mode, and then use the router to enter my PPOE settings.

However, this method seems to ge getting more and more unreliable. Suddenly I will lose the connection and the only way it seems I can get it back is to connect directly to my modem, do a reboot of it, set it back to bridge mode, connect the router again, then restore factory defaults on my router and enter all settings again. Even that sometimes doesn't work.

What does seem to reliably work is entering my PPOE settings in my modem and then setting my router to Automatic Configuration - DHCP.

(This would be fine, but I have an Internet camera I like to use to monitor my house when I am away, and it will only work if I enter the PPOE settings on the router itself. I am using a dynamic dns service with the camera, and if I don't have it setup that way, I can't view the cam over the internet. When I try to view the cam I end up at my modem configuration screen.)

So, should I try replacing my router, or should I get Bell to send me out another modem? Any other ideas on what I am doing wrong? Router is a Linksys WRT54G, and is at least 3 years old.

My router doesn't work worth a shit when I enter the PPOE settings on it, but it does work when I set it for Automatic Configuration - DHCP.

Should I just replace my router, or could there be an issue with my modem?

replace the router. Many routers get to warm due to bad cooling design. That affect the stability over time. Get a Cisco Pix or Linksys if you are cheap :-D

I think you were right. I was able to hook up a newer version of the WRT54G I forgot I had stashed in a closet, and all seems to be working good now. The router I was originally using was a version 1.1, so it had to be old as the hills.

Would be nice if the things would just stop working completely, instead of only working half the time.

Ya, that's the first thing I did after I hooked the new router up. The old one was already using the latest firmware. It's going in the garbage now.
