My first suggestion would be to get a host with 24/7 support.

My 2nd would be to restart MySQL.

FreeBSD you'll need to run safe_mysqld (If it's a ports install you can probably do a /usr/local/etc/rc.d/mysql-server.sh start)

Crap Hat Linux and Linuxes like Crap Hat:

      /etc/init.d/mysqld start

If that doesn't fix it you'll probably need to use myisamchk to repair the DBs, or something else is fucked. Get those tech support guys out of bed.

Sounds like either the mysql server crashed or permission problems, either way its doubtful your hosting company has your permissions set to do anything about it.

Your mysql client software is trying to connect to the mysql server on the local host. This means either the mysql server isn't running or its on a different machine. If mysqld should be running on the localhost, simply restart it. If mysql is on a different machine, you're going to have to change the connection to point to the remote host instead of the localhost.
