I've been a member of Playboy.com for quite some time. I don't know if their content is looking worse and worse or if I'm just getting harder to impress

There was a time when I couldn't wait to log in and see the new updates. I've spent hours in the mornings drinking coffee and studying the work of their top shooters. Lately.....most of what I see is pure trash. Only a few times a month do they update with material from their top shooters - the rest is material shot by guys who don't put any effort into what they are doing. Their lighting is shit, the skin tones are shit and the girls are so/so

Dean, you're right. Seems like in the age of digital cameras, anyone think they can be a photographer. Which makes you feel shit... considering you spend years developing your talents and produce top notch stuff.

I sometimes feel the same about the type of work I do. I think that often people think the tool will make them good at what they wanna do ...

Photoshop is a means to an end ... I draw all the toons we do by hand on paper. A friend of mine said to me just today ... "I wanna be an illustrator... someone told me I need Adobe Illustrator" ... I just looked at her and said to her that she can't allow the tool to drive her talent ... she needs her talent to drive the tool. So I told her to forget Illustrator and concentrate on her skills on paper. She's got to develop them first.

I agree with WG... although I think Twisty's, Sapphic, FTV and a few other sites have really upped the nude model ante. Playboy has been stuck in a rut for about 5 years now.

Well thanks WG - but I don't think that's the case. A shooter doesn't have to be better than me.... for me to be impressed with his work. Someone who understands lighting, posing, composition and color will go a long way towards impressing me with their skills. Only a few of the Playboy shooters have this ability and Playboy only updates that material a few times a month. The rest of the updates are filled with low-budget crap IMO.

It will be interesting to see where Playboy goes in the next few years...that's for sure

with the quality of models they have access to, they sure have trouble putting out a video that can hold attention, all trying to be artsy with annoying camera movement and angles and flashing lighting changes and completely irrelevant cutscenes,

most playboy videos end up annoying more than arousing

saving money would be my guess . . . . . . always about the bottom line with web guys . . after the membership drops off, if it does, then they'll invest in actual quality photography again . . drop them a line and express yer views . .

Playboy's problem is it spends tens of thousands on a single shoot, whereas someone like FTV Girls takes a hot chick out to public location and just shoots. Big difference there.

Playboy has had the models and photographers for years yet what's being discussed here is the content at playboy.com and why it is not of the same quality and standard.

I think this fact is absolutely one of Playboy's greatest assets. In my opinion, there isn't any other brand in existence with as much consumer trust and goodwill.

It seems to me that the bigger the truck, the harder it is to turn the wheels. All things being equal, I'd venture to say that it's only a matter of time before some of these things being mentioned get worked out.

But here's the thing I think Dean may have a point with....

I believe that Dean's shoots cost as much as or perhaps more than a Playboy shoot. The team he works with, the locations... it all adds up... Pictures like that on the norm, take some cash to produce.... We have done shoots like that in the past (Twisty's, Dean Capture, Playboy, etc), but they definitely cost.

On the other hand... I shoot like FTV does... and for that matter.. could name a few other sites, but it is much more cost effective for me to say to hell with renting a house for $2500 and having a makeup artist on staff and having 1 or 2 or 3 lighting assistants.... I know what I can shoot consistently for the best price... so that's what I do. If I had Rob's money.. or Dean's I might consider otherwise... but then again, Rob is making bank doing what he is doing, so why change. (BTW, my cost of production, with modeling fees, is under $2K for a day.. not amazing.. but I know what level of quality I want to put out for that value as well... I don't attempt to match what Dean does for that value.)

Playboy has lost their touch with who they were... they have attempted quietly to make a run at harder levels of explicitness and forgotten to stay true to what made them.

Evolution is interesting, isn't it? I have been surprised by Penthouse actually.... they are more tame than Playboy for the recent past.

don't forget though that Dean shoots a certain way... as does Playboy (which I think is his gripe...) You can have great shots come from many different styles. Dean is good.. i will give him that, but there are a lot of top tier photogs that shoot in vastly different styles.

Nice post Lensman but your reply does not address my comments at all. Everybody knows that Playboy has 1000's of girls willing to pose for them and they also know that Playboy has great photographers & videographers. The issue is why are most of the updates on Playboy.com crappy content? Only a few updates a month feature the great looking girls and the high-quality photography & videography. The rest of the updates are filled with poop IMO. Do I expect too much for my money?

Here's another question for ya' Lens. Why doesn't Playboy take some of that money that they are using to building new websites with - and fix this damn forum board? This is the slowest piece of shit adult webmaster board on the internet right now. If Playboy.com were as slow as this board, people would be cancelling their subscriptions each and every day.
