    Dedicated vs. Virtual ?

I know this may sound stupid, but anyway, what is the REAL advantage to have a dedicated hosting plan instead of virtual.

I am burning about 150 Gigs / month now, but in a month will be doing twice the amount and maybe even more.

I am trying to figure out which way and where to go.

    Thanks.

in dedicated you will have more cpu and memory resources

only disadvantage could be the price

When you have a dedicated you know that some dumbfuck trying a new cgi script does not crash the server with some poorly written code

Or at least that you were the dumbfuck that crashed it
Total control of resources is the best thing about having a dedicated

In virtual hosting, I like the idea of having a dozen other people complain when the server is down, while I am in vacation or sleeping. I always had dedicated servers but looking more into high bandwidth virtual accounts now. techiemedia and isprime offer some, for instance.

Dedicated will give you more control, more resources, better expandability, (is that a word?) more speed vs. sharing, less headaches, more expense, and smack talkin' rights over how great your dedicated is.

with dedicated, you can even resell space and make money

and probably the bandwidth is gonna cost you less, so you can even host galleries

Basically, if you're doing 150 gigs a month, you should consider a dedicated box. It will give you much more space to move and the price could well remain about the same (depends on the host you choose, of course)

                        Thanks everyone!

Basically this is the reason I asked my questions:

When I started hosting with my current host on virtual account - things were just great - sites loaded ultra fast and uptime wasn't an issue at all.

Now, six month later, while uptime became a minor issue (their support is pretty good) the major problem is load time. I am sick and tired getting e-mail like "...I would list your site, but it's too damn slow..." and I can't afford this to happen, because it beats all the purpose of what I am doing.

Problem is: I don't know, and have no idea how to find out, what exactly is causing this slowdown. My guesses are: 1. my host's connection to the network became worse that it was siz month ago; 2. the virtual box became too crowded, and the processor isn't handling the load.

If it's #1 - I just need to find a new virtual host, but who is the good one (price/performance) is the question.

If it's #2 - Looks like I need a dedicated, but again where is the best host for it.

I looked and found decent prices at:

                        candidhosting.com
                        likewhoa.com
                        isprime.com
+ one more (secret host) :-)

... but the first two started a pissing match on this board, and then another guy pissed on both of them. :-(

Another guy has a virtual account on isprime.com and said that they are becoming slower every day.

And the last one, told me good things about their host, but it's all kinda, "trust me" thing.

WHAT SHOULD I DO??? WHOM CAN I TRUST???
(looks like a cry for help - IT IS!)

Thanks in advance for the good advices!

Thanks for everyone for helping me out with this hosting thing. Some of the guys offered pretty good deals. So far, I think Soul_Rebel?s offer is unbeatable.

Here is exactly what I need if someone is willing to help me with the hosting.

                                  1. Truly burstable badnwidth (not capped and not measures by some wired percentile method, which I can?t figure out) J
                                  2. I run multiple domains (much more than 5), so I need as many unique IP?s as I can get.
                                  3. DNS records and POP/SMTP accounts created for those domains that will be tagged to the IP?s from #1 and hosted on the host?s DNS.
                                  4. For each IP, I will need a separate directory under my main account and stats (bandwidth usage) for each of the directories (IP?s), not the whole account.
                                  5. I can host multiple domains in one directory with a CGI script that I have, and I need CGI files enabled in the root directory and the default document set to index.html(shtml) and index.cgi (this way I won?t need to bother the hosting support when I need to install another domain. I register them through register.com and can simply point them to an IP)
                                  6. At least one MySQL database.
                                  7. 24/7 e-mail and/or ICQ support

If I can get a fast and reliable service on a virtual account, it would be great, but if you want to talk me into getting a dedicated, please don?t tell me all those technical terms. Just tell me why I should have it. (?Just get it, you cheap bastard, probably isn?t an argument?) J

I would like to have prices for a contract with the following transfer corridors for both virtual and dedicated plans. Up to 150 Gigs/ month; 150 to 200 Gigs, 200 to 300 Gigs and so on. + The prices for the overages for each corridor + Monthly (all inclusive) fee for the box and it?s specs, if you talk me into going with the dedicated solution.

                                  Thanks a million.
