XP Random reboot??

Anyone else running XP experienced some random reboots? I was browsing GFY and bam...The computer reboots, no error msg, nothing... Not the firt time it happens, and I saw this thing happened on another computer (also running XP)...
Anyone else getting this and/or know how to fix this?? I had nothing unsaved now but it could be fatal if it happened at the wrong moment!....
Damn XP, the more I use it, the more I hate it!....

No, but close, a TNT2... (which is also made by nVidia...could be related)...and my friend (who also had this trouble) has a GeForce3...stats to make sense...

Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Startup + Recovery -> Un-check Automatically restart.

That will bring up the "Blue Screen of Death" instead of just restarting and you can see what's bringing the system down.

I recently got a NVidia card as a secondary video adapter for my 2nd display and it happend once or twice. fucking weird. must be some weird driver conflict as I think the nvidia drivers aren't fully XP compatible.

You mean instead of a blue screen, XP just restart the computer?? If it's true, it's the stupidest thing i've heard LOL...And they say "Try the new XP...No blue Screen!"....yeah right, it fuckin restart the computer instead!...

I think it's the nVidia chipsets, in general, when combined with XP. My friend's been having this problem with GeForce cards. I tried both of his GeForce cards in my XP machine adn had the exact same problems.

I am having another psychic flash: Your computer has an Athlon processor.

No, a pentium...but I think it still make sense.... now that I think about it, most of the people I saw with this problem had both XP and an nVidia videocard....

Guess I'm no Miss Cleo. The problem seems to be more severe when combined with the VIA chipset common on Athlon motherboards.

is your computer tower in a enclose desk storage or something that is blocking your rear Fan? It could be over heating! that would cause random reboot without errors.

Exactly. I would reccomend you upgrade your video card drivers (I think the TNT2 is still supported in the detonators), do a bios update if possible, and make sure you have the latest chipset drivers as well. I don't buy into the AMD + NVidia theory going on in this thread, I've had NVidia cards since the TNT came out and my computer(s) have never done that. I run an Athlon and a GF4 system now that has been stable since the day I put it together. However, I'm thinking a TNT2 video card could almost be considered legacy hardware at this point in time.

You don't have to believe it, it's fact. Hit all the major game websites (Warcraft 3, Battlefield, etc, anything new...) you'll find slews of people with this exact problem and about 90% of them are running GeForce/AMD combos, including myself and my friend. Both of our systems have the very newest drivers not only for the cards, but for all onboard devices and I upgraded both our motherboards to the lastes BIOS's. Didn't help a thing. I believe most people with this problem were using AGP cards, too.

I would swap out the ram. I had a box that would run stable 90% of the time, but when I would play certain games, it would honk. Swapped out the ram and everything was fine.

Actually, we tried that. Previously, my friend had a problem where he could have one of his RAM chips in at a time. It didn't matter which one, but if he put both in at the same time he had problems. We tried it with several RAM configurations.

XP for me is running perfect. maybe you just need to uninstall and reinstall the OS eh? maybe that would fix it? just a suggestion.

From what I've read, you need a new psu or less power hungry hardware. Running an nVidia chip with XP eats power. XP is a resource hog, thus, more power needed to process. nVIdia cards use alot of power. SpaceAce. as for your ram statemnt, Sounds like the sysytem just cannot provide enough amperage for more than one stick. Either replace PSU or replace the capacitors on the motherboard that condition the power.

It could be something as simple as a loose connection somewhere. Check to make sure that all your plugs have a good connection and then check inside just to make sure there isn't something loose in there.

I've also seen computers have probs due to the CPU getting too hot (as someone mentioned above). Try powering down and just let it sit and cool of for a little while, then boot back up. If you notice that the problem seems to have gone, but comes back after you have had it on for a while, then this could be it.

Hopefully, it's one of these simple, common solutions here, but if it isn't - I'd suspect one of your cards, or the motherboard to be the culprit.
