shell, Perl & PHP programers - what editor do you use ?

looking for something better than what I have.
I'm thinking about UltraEdit or vim.

I need an editor that has a regex search and replace, lets me edit files over 1gb, colorizes all parts of the code by character (vars, functions etc.) , autocomplete, encoding convertion (UTF-8 to ANSI etc.) and of course all the basics as line number on the side, spell checker etc.

I use WeBuilder. Wouldn't even think about using anything else for what I do.

I'm confused.. You say you're looking for a new editor.. So how would you know what the best one is then?

I like things lean and mean... Been programming 25+ years now and editplus does everything I need it to do without getting in my way with shit I don't want.

But I'm not one to say there isn't something that couldn't be better so if you find something I'd love to hear about it.

Zend Studio is the best PHP editor I have used so far.

I use Ultraedit for everything else, also PHP if I just need to change some small things.

by saying it's not the best I meant that there are others that are better - so it can't be number 1. but that doesn't mean I already found the best one for me. and let me emphasis, when I say the best one I mean best one for me. UltraEdit is better for me because if the easy usage of RegEx and built in SFTP feature.

EditPlus has RegEx and FTP.. Or is the regex in UltraEdit easier to use? and when you say SFTP is that a protocol editplus doesn't have or something?

I've tried txtmate and it's great for complex directory structure scripts, and I love it's autocomplete functions, but I just can't get out of the BBEdit style - I can't get textmate to highlight functions, strings and stuff, something simple like tab stop vertical lines can't be shown (which I use a lot) and stuff like that.

What I would really like in either texmate or bbedit is the ability to put coding timestamps/checkmarks on scripts and if something goes wrong, roll back to a certain timepoint. Sort of like a self-contained cvs - that would be fantastic. I can't get into the whole cvs thing, so if it was bundled with an app, that would be great!!

VIM was designed from the ground up so that you NEVER have to move your hands from the homerow keys. It speeds up your editing time considerably. I would search around for some example .vimrc files (vim config files). Many people post them online, and you can grab bits and peices of all the different files that provide the behavior you want.
