ok heres the deal. My laptop currently have 2 HD on it..one is standard(4 gb) and the other is 30 GB..the problem is whenever I try to install a program it always try's to install it on the main HD which is the c drive where windows is and that HD has only 42mb of space left. How do I get programs to start writing to the other HD when i initiate the disc?
small PC problem..

When you are prompted for the location to install the program, it always defaults to c:
So, instead of just clicking next, go the the install path and manually change the c: to d: (or whatever your second drive letter is)unattended error: ID 10 T. Check connection between keyboard and chair. -
i tried do this..what I am doing is trying to install XP and office XP on my comp. For some reason they wont let me manually pick which HD I want to load them onto yet I can see both when it says that the c drive is low on disc spaceOriginally posted by pine

This might be the best solution. XP (both Office and Windows) are a bit quirky and need to have elements on the c: drive (especially Windows). You may want to back up the booty mpegs from the c: to the d:, format the c: and just do a clean install.Originally posted by Amputate Your Head
format c:
(edit) Is the c: drive 2 or 4 gigs? Windows XP needs a bigger drive.Last edited by pine; 12-30-2002, 08:20 PM.unattended error: ID 10 T. Check connection between keyboard and chair.Comment

Use partion magic it will trick the laptop into thinking that both drives are the same, so you will have one big C drive.
I have used this many times, works great.

j/k, TDF....you could go in there and swap the cables and jumpers so the 30 gig is the master drive...you'd still have to do all the formatting and CMOS stuff, though.Originally posted by toodamnfli

be VERY careful with this kinda software. Backups are always a good idea when fucking with one's HDD at this level..Originally posted by Cyber3

A little trick the old man taught me wayyy back when Gates took over in a bloodless coup.......... ALWAYS format every drive /s . It snookers MS products trying to decide where they want to default to.
We haven't had an op system on a C drive since he tore apart my Microcenter proprietary Laser in early 95. lol Nor have we had a MS product insist on the drive letter it will or will not install on.
Just make sure you keep notes on how many drives you have and where the drive letters are coming from in case you ever need to change a drive.

I have used it and server magic several times hell I even used the Novell version, you do not need to reformat or mess with the cmos or anything just install it then it has a Disk Manager that you can adjust or merge the drives as needed.

two suggestions tdf:
1. Can you get rid of the small drive and replace it with the larger one? (thereby making it the primary and only drive in the system)
2. If #1 fails, can you go into the bios and disable the primary HDD and make the second (larger) drive the master?
either one would seem a viable option....SIG TOO BIGComment
