Apache Experts - Configuration Advice Wanted

I am trying to optimize a couple of my apache servers. p4 2000 512mb - Bandwidth average 3 mbps - gallery traffic - approx 16 thumbnails per page

Right now I have:
StartServers set to 12
MaxClients set to 600
KeepAlive Off

Anyone running similar traffic that would like to share their thoughts on the optimum appache configuration, keeping my existing level of memory and CPU.

I am not an expert, but your start up number of connections is way too low. Have 40-50 for something like that Have keepalive between 2-4 seconds, that keeps things fast and doesn't leave the connections open for long if the person isn't going to use it.

hehehe.. with max clients 5092 you can push probably 150+ mbps gallery traffic

You can't everything depends on what you're serving.....big movies....yes you can server 80Mbps with that with 1 100Mbps
NIC card....TGP galleries.....forget it....

Depending on what kind of OS you run you can increase the
max clients by editing httpd.h and change hard_server_limit

On linux 2048 is the max unless you recompile the kernel but
going higher will probably make your system quite unstable.

FreeBSD out of the box 4096 take in account that you do need
quit a bit of RAM and CPU in order to run a shitload of apache
childs.

For TGP galleries I wouldn't turn off keepalive but just put the
timeout lower...since there are many small files it will only cause
a shitload of connections per page

Start servers high prevents apache to inmediately start heavy
forking of new childs which takes server resources.

If you don't need logging turn off the access_logs for all domains
if you do need logging, write logfiles to a different HDD or at least
a different partition....read/write to disk is load if you don't need
it turn it off...

Also when building apache use only modules you need.....anything
you don't need.....don't use it. Each request is spiralled through all modules available to see if it has to do something. Less modules, higher perfomance. Compile modules static in httpd binary.....avoid DSO loadable mods at runtime.
