    tech question: keyboard failure

One of the kids here went to boot up his PC and got a keyboard failure, missing some file (NTLDR)

    Anyone have any suggestions?

I love when you get a keyboard failure and they tell you to hit any key to continuie

Sounds easy enough . . . how do you do that on a PC that won't boot?

Yeah, that was the first thing I asked him if he had . . . nope.

Then I asked if he had his install CD as maybe we could boot from it (If CD was first in the boot procedure). He only had SP2, but CD was not first in boot procedure.

Anyway, seems that thru the course of incessant reboots his keyboard failure went away.

Tried to get him to start in safe mode, but apparently he ended up picking some option that is running a test (no idea what as he doesn't remember what he clicked.).

                Will see what happens.

NTLDR is the Windows kernel. You have to either boot to a
rescue disk and repair the OS installation or, possibly try to
do an upgrade on the OS (same version as currently loaded)
and see if that can replace the file.

Another option is to boot to some other partition or disk
(floppy ie. NTFS DOS) and see if you can access the OS
installation that will not boot. If this can be done, you can
copy a version of NTLDR into the non-bootable installation.

Of course, using the upgrade, or even copying in NTLDR, method
will back out all security updates and patches so, you will have a
LONG LIST of patches to install.

If you had that problem and it just "went away" then you need to be concerned because it likely means a bad sector is developing on the hard drive, right where windows is sitting. That can get get ugly.

Yeah, that is pretty much what I told him might be happening. We got it running (by re-installing Windows), then it stopped again, but I think was holding up by the time I left.

Luckily they have lots of spare drives in the basement.

if it's keyboard failure just plug it in properly and make sure the keys aren't mashed down with cum or something
