http://www.phpbb.com is not bad. Its free. They have been alot better about releasing updates.

They have to be, and so will you... keep up with those updates or else you'll get hacked hard.
Let it slip for a month or so and you could open up your server to anyone.

phpbb is constantly exploited.

PHPBB is nice, but they aren't fucking around when they recommend you stay on top of patches.

Big forum scripts == lots of people who want to exploit it

If you want security, go with a smaller one off of hotscripts.com, or a custom one. The ones on hotscripts.com might be less secure in their code, but there aren't 3428432084284023 hackers trying to find the exploits for it, either.

Custom scripts are nice cause they're easily integrated, not too much to configure, no excess features that don't benefit you, etc.

If you want a free script choose phpbb. If you have budget on it buy vbulletin. Just keep an eye on every updates.

I have a php board...and it's free...i mean unlimited bandwidth usage...and everything...and I can say that the host offer lots of security options. It's free because it's ad supported...
