The load time is so slow that the surfer is able to close the window
before anything registers.

I've tried it myself... sit and wait (up to 40 seconds) while the page
loads (I'm on a 7meg AT&T link) and it registers. Click the close
because you got bored waiting for the load, of coarse not raw
registered.

If images don't start coming up in 12-15 seconds, who's going to
sit around an wait for it?
