TD - Are you guys doing some maintenance on the site or something? I just clicked on a link and it took 67 seconds to load the page. Is this a problem that you guys are working on or is this something I should take up with my ISP? The only site I visit daily that gives me any troubles is GFY. Why would Time Warner Cable give me a problem when I load GFY and not with any of the other sites that I visit on a daily basis?

Its been off and on all day and pretty much every other day. Maybe we could start a donation thread for additional servers since there seems to be donation threads for everything else. I frequent some mainstream forums that have far more traffic than gfy and their pages load instantly."WTF, on google you can find the answer to every question in human history, EXCEPT how to convert cams..
Its crazy..."

Hey Rich - that's great for you. But for me - it sucks
If it's a problem on my end - I'd like to know so I can get something done about it. If it's a problem on your end - it would be nice to know that as well. Either way, I'm thrilled that you have a great connection

For me it's about 30/70. 30 percent of the time threads load ok and 70 percent of the time they lag considerably. If there's anyone who knows what the hell is going on - please let me in on it. If it's something that I can have looked at on my end I'll call my ISP and get them on it right away. I don't think it is on my end though since I don't have any issues surfing any sites except GFY

Same for me and there seems to be a slowdown overall when there are more than 4 or 5 contests on the main page. Bots maybe?Comment

Netcraft says GFY's running FreeBSD with Apache and PHP, so it's not a windows issue ( like myspace using windows and cold fusion).
My guess is this site gets so flooded with retarded posts that their software gets flooded with requests and can't handle / pool the load at times. I'm retarded, so I don't know if there's any PHP -> DB connection pooling software, but my initial guess would be a bottle-neck between PHP trying to open and close a limited number of connections offered by the DB backend.
Then again, I work for a company that redundant everything: oracle, mysql, customer farms, member farms, secure join farms and if someone fucks up a router setting all of it goes to hell. And I'm retarded on the whole subject.
So.....
TD -- Good for you man, for keeping this place running, even if people complain. I have no idea about being a sys-admin, but I'd think I'd rather sell flavored, shaved ice on a carribean beach.
Your post count means nothing.Comment

I think it only happens when a contest gets close and you have a lot of bots and contest whores refreshing constantly. Whenever it happes to me, it always seems like a contest is on top.Comment

From time to time we do have problems. Many times it is due to new (never heard of) search engines that try to grab all 11-million GFY posts from dozens of IP's all at the same time. Sometimes it's backbone issues that are out of my control, as I'm a few hundred miles from the actual servers themselves. I'll blame it all on Al Gore, he designed shitty interwebs.
