What makes an affiliate program good?
I am currently in the process of putting together a affiliate program for one of my sites and would like some webmaster imput on what makes a program good. I have my reasons for liking different programs. Anybody got and suggestions?

Everything Cohen said plus do they give you what you need to make money---ads that really sell, good free content, tours that sell, galleries, etc.
And are you accessible?--can I talk to a rep if I have a question, get some help if I'm not converting like I think I should, or my check isn't on time.

Be exciting, brilliant, fresh and new and make everyone have an orgasim when they come to your site, everyone should want to join and of course be unique without being way off the beating path.
Don't cheat lie or steal or spam everyone about it and I hope you pay on time and don't shave and don't talk about it on GFY!

Pay on time, don't shave
Even if you have to have lower payouts to make that happen.
Word of mouth will pay off in the long run.
Multiple Full Page ads and Half page ads.
Lots of Banners. I am so sick of signing up for sponsors and then they have 5 horizonal bannes for the site I want. If I am making 30 sites, 6 pages each. Yeah, I want lots of banners. ~50 when you start a program made by at least *two* different designers. Different styles convert for different traffic.
(My favourite is when you put heads of at least 4-5 chicks beside each other). Everytime I use a banner like taht from a company, I get 3x the clickthrough of any other banner.
Be Accessable. Don't make it feel like it is a chore to contact you, make it easy and friendly.

honesty is the biggest by far.
free content thats regularly updated and good quality is nice. no cookie cutter sites like most of the big programs. answer webmaster questions asap. listen to your members, it'll only help retention. try to find out what they want and give it to them. no consoles is nice.Comment

oh, biggest tip, be nice, when your starting off, keep in touch with as many affilliates as you can, as you get bigger, try assinging people to mantain 'teams' of affiliates and stuff, keep in good contact!

Except for some of the billing companies that seem to be having a hard time issuing checks (oh WHERE does the money go?!), I'd look for a program that is NOT administered by the website owner and go for one managed (and with stats viewable through) a reputable third-party biller.
And then let's not forget the site offering the affiliate program. Does it have exclusive or at least seldom-seen content? Is the price right for the type and quantity of content (niche sites and sites with exclusive material can justify higher signup fees, which can mean more money to you...and this type of site is probably going to retain better as well).SIG TOO BIG!
