    Recursive search and replace program..

    i am looking for a windows search and replace program.
    I want to tell it what to look for, what to replace with, and let it go about it's business. Most of the programs I have downloaded to try want specific file names. I want one that I can give it a directory and it will handle that and all subdirectories. Anyone know of a program that does this? Thanks,

    I'm assuming this would be easily solved in some kind of UNIX forum w/ a few "seemingly" simple grep commands, blah blah.

      I have tried using ppl's simple unix programs in the past. Woo, used a badly written shell script, truncated 1 out of ever 15 of my html files

        I'm using "Advanced Find And Replace" from here http://www.vknoware.com.

        Works great, recursive + multiple text lines too. Handy when replacing like 20 HTML text lines in 800 files.

        Good luck.

              [B]In DOS I could do it pretty easily w/ text editor macros... build the file hierarchy into a text file, then have the macro traverse the the list in sequence, opening and doing search replace, then closing each file, and then next in the list... I still have that program actually, it's called "e.exe" and it's an IBM Internal Use Only program, but if you get desperate I suppose we could arrange something.

                I used to do this kind of shit all the time working on OS/2 -- I was a freakin macro genius... We even had a game where you could battle your opponent with custom macros... (Flash Attack) Macros within Macros -- crazy fun shit!

                  Advanced find and replace is working beautifully!

                    Here's a nifty way to do it under unix with perl with a perl style regexp:

                    perl -pi -e 's/search/replace/g' *

                    You can combine this with a find so:

                    find . type \*.html -exec perl -pie 's/gif/jpg/g' {} \;
