    ICQ Help Please

    Hi everyone.

My ICQ has been fucked up for a few days now, ever since I reinstalled the drivers for my webcam. I've now uninstalled them, but ICQ still doesn't work. I load up and it gives me a bunch of DLL errors, and an illegal operation. So I need your help.

Does anyone know where abouts on my PC the contact list will be stored? I dread to lose the thing... so I've not uninstalled/reinstalled ICQ (yet), and I've not been able to use it for days. It would be great if I could find the file that contains my contact list on my harddrive, shove it on disk and fix ICQ.

So... does anyone know the location of this file, if it exists. Please?

    And thanks in advance.

if you go to the icq site, they have instructions how to back up your contact list. They recommend it if you upgrade icq, so I know they tell you how.

The files you need to find are: youricqnumber.dat, youricqnumber.idx and youricqnumber.uin. These are inside the ICQ folder...these files I usually backup before reinstalling icq
      Hope that helps.

http://www.icq.com/icq123/backupconlist.html is the backup. A simple reinstall over the existing should repair the dll's

Yeah I backed up mine too but how do you get your contact list back in once you reinstall ICQ?

rename the new files that ICQ redoes to xxxxx.xxx and copy the files back into the ICQ directory. It should all open up with the UINs and names etc in place.

Always rename new files JIC something is messed up and you can have those to get going if your saved files are corrupted from the backup.

All you need to do is go into your ICQ folder, and

                  1. Copy the "2000b" folder to your desktop.

                  2. After you reinstall ICQ ... run it and register an existing user(your account # and password are needed). You will then have your list, but missing all your contacts.

                  3. Now CLOSE ICQ and go to your 2000b folder on your desktop. Drop that folder back into C:\Program Files\Icq ... then with ICQ NOT RUNNING, double click on the "DBconvert" icon located in the same directory.

                  4. If you have multiple user accounts on your ICQ, you will have to repeat steps 2-3 for each account.

** Most people have trouble restoring their contact lists, simply because the don't REGISTER AN EXISTING USER before they run the DBconvert. Your ICQ number MUST first be associated with your ICQ client, for the database converter to work. People who just drop the database files into a new install of ICQ with no accounts yet associated to it will be unsucessful in running the database converter, ... and will of course blame it on ICQ.
