I thought they would talk about back oriface or sub7 or irc bots (zombies) or something along those lines. The interesting part to me is what all they are doing to monitor it.

I actually turned this on about half way through and they showed some hacker class with a bunch of commands on the screen like

ps aux & grep & vi etc. And they also had a bunch of screenshots n the background of microsoft terminal servers and software.

It was some "school" for hackers. At that point I turned it off, because if someone has to go to school to be a hacker they are not going to be one. I helped do intrusion detection in my network days, and know some guys who were "real" hackers that could get into just about anything back then and they all learned from breaking into networks on their own. I probably should have given the show more of a chance, but that part seemed really lame like a bad episode of cops where "hackers get the bad guy."

I caught the last little bit of the program but it looked kind of corny. My first husband was a hacker extraordinaire. He hacked Novell back in the day....took them almost a year to catch him (he was hacking in at night to use their mainframe to generate ray tracings. It took our machine like 2 days to generate an image, it took their mainframe about 4.5 seconds). After they caught him, made sure he went to court, and did his weekends of jailtime, they hired him to fix their security. In the later year or so of our marriage, he decided it would be fun to hack into several bank hubs and set himself up bank accounts to filter all the half cents and quarter cents into. After he found several of them had accrued a million or more, he was too afraid to access them and later disappeared. When he resurfaced he was ripping off car stereos and snorting an 8ball a day. Hence the reason there's an EX attached to his name. But he was and probably still is an amazing hacker, and one of the most fantastically superintelligent computer people i've ever known (he taught me from scratch too). He was a genius too, mensa level...too bad being smart doesn't equate to having a personality.....

It was pretty interesting how they explained what the CodeRed Virus was. This is like anything else on TV, take the info in a accept that it's not always the best thing out there.

As for the hackers that are there, well it doesn't mean they're shit hackers. Cold Fire was there, and in a previous hacker program, they had Kevin Mitnick. Can't call him a wannabe.

The funny part was that flaky Hacker Anthropologist at the end and the bearded guy that kept talking as if he was making a speech to the world. THOS guys are ABSOLUTE losers.

And yes, Hacker University is a joke, but it's not to LEARN how to be a hacker, it's for IT managers to understand some of the basica ways hackers use to get in. What to look for. It's for the people that went through the IT chain the legit way, through college and all that, not guys that have had the programming passion since they were 12 years old.

I've been told that the US Air Force Academy's Information Warfare Division can actually do this. The AFA still uses ADA though... not too reassuring.
