why does my PC keep locking up

I moved an older box out to the living room to use, and everything works fine, then for no reason it just locks up... 10min later, it's all working again. Just keeps sporadically freezing like this. So far I've run disk defrag, virus scans, adware/spyware removal, etc. Nothing seems to be fixing it. I'm hoping I don't have to reinstall the OS, but I dunno what else to do.

Maybe it is a memory problem. My workstation worked flawless ever since i got it and suddenly started to make trouble. I changed the RAM and everything was fine again.

Get a boot cd with memcheck86 and do a test run for 24 hours.

        probably hardware problem, do this:

open it and see if the CPU fan spins all the time
then start removing shit one by one - start with one memory stick (or replace if you have only one), video card etc

to make sure its hardware problem restart in safe mode and see if it still 'locks up', if it does - its 99% hardware problem

once you can be sure it's not a virus/spyware/adware infection, you can assume it's a hardware issue...

if it's freezing, but staying on, it's probably a memory or video card problem.

if it's turning off, it's probably a power supply problem.

thanks for the tips!! I'm gonna try them all and see what works. I think the memory or video card might be the culprit as you suggested Antonio.
