I saw it along time ago, but i do remember it being an excellent portrayal of indulgance and obsession.SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.Comment

Hmmm, how could you ever even read a 1.2 trillian place number within your lifetime? The things that turn folks on are amazing. I'll stick to apple pie. Much easier to deal with LOL.

I dunno... call me a geek, but I think it's kinda cool. As someone with a background in way too much calculus and physics, I'm fascinated by the randomness of the numbers. And it really does say a lot about the computational abilities of supercomputers that this guy managed to get 1.24 trillion places.

I always get a kick out of it when people say things like this. Our society seems to have such an ignorance of what science is that it's disturbing. To say that a mathematical scientist would have better spent time working on a cure for cancer than on mathematical\computing pursuits is exactly the same as me saying "I'm glad porn is more important to you than world hunger".Originally posted by tanco521

You ask, "what could the point of that possibly be?" Advances in computing means more power to all forms of research that uses technology. Cancer and AIDS research falls right in there with that group (heavily even), and the better their technological capabilities, the more work can be done in those fields.
Sorry I don't mean to jump on you, but science is worth more thought than what we generally give it. Don't try so hard to diminish it if you don't truly understand it.

I would even go so far as to say that not only is pushing the limits of computer power critical to science, but that it is quite particularly important to genetics research, the field which has fostered the recent discoveries about RNAi that may allow us to overwrite corrupt/overreplicating or viral dna, which is exactly what you're bitching about. Furthermore, the behavior of dna in the process of evolution fits a chaos pattern, as seen in pi- an series of possible values whose only discernable pattern is that they never appear to attain a repeat pattern. The pursuit of pi is the pursuit of the infinitude of recombinatory possibilities of natural chaos. It's intuitive to say that there exists an infinite set of possible sentences. It's quite another thing to find an instance of it in nature, or to build a machine that can comprehend every sentence ever spoken via the development of life on earth.Originally posted by Jak
