Its best to take your time and really think about what you want and where you want it. Don't just walk into a random shop and get something done, have a look around. Spend a day visiting the shops in your area, talk to the artists, look through their portfolios etc.. When you find someone that makes you feel comfortable and does good work talk to them about your ideas and have them do a custom piece.

9 times out of 10 people that get some random tattoo with little meaning end up not liking it down the road. A good artist will take your ideas, thoughts, inspirations and turn it into a masterpiece. With or without reference material. Don't rush into anything!
