Can you really compare conversion ratios?

I keep seeing on many boards people asking what conversion ratio people get with XXX program, or what program converts the best for them...

It really annoys me to see questions like this because you simply cannot compare conversion ratios in that way. Conversions are based on a HUGE number of factors, not simply the program that you are using. Things like the type of site you are using the program on, the banners or promotional text you are using, even the background color of your site has a bearing on your conversions to a particular program.

That is just what I think... anyone else have any ideas?

conversion ratio to me depends on 2 things


1. the way you promote the sponsor.. teen tgp -> teen niche sponsor or having a lil simular content/model on your site that your sponsor has on their tour page.

and
2. some ppl are just lucky :P

conversions don't matter. you have to use program which makes you most money not which 'converts' best...

Yeh -- I can't figure out why people get so fascinated by conversion ratios. I can promote a site one way and produce great ratios (tell the surfer everything -- including cost -- before sending him to the sign-up page) or another way a get terrible ratios (focus on the free promotional pics available). But what matters is the number of SALES. I'd rather sell 10 with a conversion ration of 1/1000 than 2 with a conversion ration of 1/100. Quite honestly, I don't even look at conversion ration stats. I look at the size of the checks -- which I always thought was the name of the game .
