It's pandora's Box...we need it to improve our standard of living..it will deliver organs and other needed tissues...but it's really a complex issue...i have no problem with the moral side of it...if you want to clone yourself then i guess it's up to you....but the thought of two hundred Arnold's running around the earth is sort of unsettling...it also raises the question of the rites of the clones themsleves...what are they going to be used for? Secret missions to Mars with no hope of return? the perfect military soldier? ah Science Fiction here we come

a clone is pretty much an identical twin. i think its a very important medical advance.

The only difference between human cloning and in vitro fertilization is that with cloning you know ahead of time what the genetic makeup of the child will be. Doesn't seem like a big deal to me. All the arguments I've heard against human cloning are just fear mongering. It's not like these clones will be created in some factory. Just like a test tube babe, a woman will have to carry it for 9 months and give birth to it. You'll just know what it will look like ahead of time. So what?

Ok, say we clone humans for extra body parts, what do you do, keep your clone caged up til you need it? That's just fuked up, another you, just chill'n waiting to be chopped up. How much money do you think it would cost to raise a clone?? I'm thinking probably more than any regular kid.

The animals who have been cloned so far have all exhibited flaws...Dolly the sheep has arthritis...while it could be said that the quality of the work is to blame there...think of all the failed attempts and then the chance of having a screwed up copy made and delivered.

i think it should be explored but very carefully...casue im sure if we are gettting into it now...then somewhere there is a half-human half-gerbil sitting in some underground lab(kidding) ...maybe once they can scan out imperfections at a low enough cell count(like 16-64) then we should go ahead with it carefully...

cloning humans for body parts is like taking someone's identical twin and locking them up in a cage and using them for bodyparts.

See with this you can grow your spare body parts and just leave them in storage till you need them. For anyone squeamish about having a clone of yourself locked up somewhere just waiting to be harvested, they actually can tweak a few cells/genes so that your clone will be born without a head or more ideally an upper brain. So this means it will just be a big meaty storehouse for your spares.

but seriously; people thing of this cloning like science fiction. This is cloning very much like having an identical twin; that is it originates from the splitting of the original germ cell.


People think its like in the movies, where they can take a gene sample from your hair, skin etc, and create a new you. That kind of technology we wont have to worry about for I would say at least another 100 years.

Kind of what people would call 'virtual reality' which was really two monitors stuck in front of your eyes in glasses, when the 'real virtual reality' you see in movies is truly managing implantation of audiovisual senses directly to your brain to see and hear what is not really in front of your eyes -- again that technology is 100 years away, at least.

Cloning for body parts may help get us through bad diseases but it won't prolong life much, not until we get the technology to transfer memories from one brain to another.

The brain eventually dies. With a completely healthy person, no strokes, no head injuries, etc, it still degrades between 80 and 120 years old.

Too bad we'll probably be able to clone a brain long before we can make any use of that brain.

And... once we can transfer memories, why would you want your same body anyway? Why not manufacter a perfect body and transfer your memories in there? Or why even have a body? You could exist in a virtual world where you made up what happened.

Whew... too much weirdness... crazy world coming up. Who on this thread still believes in a God?

We're coming into a new era, and I can't wait. Immortality and cloning... I foresee a time when we stop having to reproduce, and the fear of death is completely eliminated. Once that happens, we won't need religion. We won't need to believe in an afterlife to give us comfort. We can start putting all of our resources into making forward progress. I'm glad I might actually live to see it.
